Fall is in the air, y’all! Or it’s getting closer to you (we’re winking at you Florida)! It’s time to pull out your tan & fleece lined booties and snuggly soft leggings so you can head to the local cafe and order a PSL.
Does all of this sound a bit foreign to you? Read on my friends, and join the ‘dark side’ that is… BASIC. By the end of this article you will have channeled your Inner Basic just in time for this for this cold weather season.
Everyone can embrace their Inner Basic. All you have to do is follow these simple steps:
Buy yourself some comfy looking and even more comfy feeling boots. We use the terms ‘boots’ generously, as they may be boots, booties, knee-highs, enclosed wedges, flats, or even slippers. You do you… in ‘boots’.
Essentially, one cannot achieve true Basic Status without the signature stereotypical pair of faux fur lined boots. We include ‘faux’ because we love our animals, not wear them*
Stock up on stockings. By stockings, we mean the millennial coined “leggings”! The unicorns of leg wear, leggings are the superior and basic alternative to uncomfortable scratchy denim jeans.
To be basic, you must have (ALL) the leggings to go with (ALL) the faux fur lined boots.
We are talking one in every color and pattern to go with every outfit (duh). Leggings are richly basic in that they are the perfect outfit accoutrement regardless of size, style and weather. Need to be extra bundled? Layer the leggings. Need to dress up? Wear a dress with the leggings. Need to dress down? Wear aforementioned faux fur lined slippers with the leggings. No shame in our legging game, I have a dresser drawer full of leggings… What can I say? I’m basic.
The oversized sweatshirt, is a ‘Clueless’-worthy-staple. Who can honestly say they don’t enjoy a good oversized sweatshirt or pullover whilst sipping on a warm latte, watching Hocus Pocus for the third time… in a week. Whether you call them hoodies, pullies, sweaters, or the like, find yourself a decent thrift store and raid that 80s rack of oversized long sleeves for your Basic Bombshell look.
Pumpkin Spice Everything. Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL) to go with a Pumpkin Spice Scone whilst going pumpkin picking at the pumpkin patch to later bake a Pumpkin Spice Pie. For fall and for being Basic, Pumpkin Spice IS the spice of life. Every cafe will have their own rendition of this seasonal favorite. Why be THAT person that sticks to just one? Try them all.
*A helpful backstage Basic tip for next year… stock up on this McCormick mainstay spice for next year.
Frequent your local Fall Festivities. Wearing only your Basic best outfits and PSL in hand of course, check out the attractions near you to celebrate the season. Activities such as “watching the leaves change” and “apple picking” are exceptionally Basic. We also fancy Fall Art Festivals, Pumpkin Patches and Music Fests with fellow Basic members of society.
Protect that Basic ego of yours with a fashionable yet functional lid.
Beanies, toboggans and felt floppy hats are the Basic accessories that come to mind.
Protect those pretty ears while donning a trendy apparel that others will surely to compare you to the latest Urban Outfitter.
Not cold enough to wear a hat? Don’t sweat it, literally – sport that beanie in the 80s if you have to, because its (basically) a necessity for fall.
Plaid is not just for your lumberjack lover. We added this Basic addition last minute once we realized that this Fall was marking a true come back for the textile that is Plaid. Not just for the grunge kids of the nineties any longer, plaid is back and fierce as ever with the two or three colors in which plaid comes in; red, green and maybe blue. Basic brownie points and kudos to you nineties babies if you find your plaid in another color and sport it with your velvet leggings.
To really complete your look of Basic, be sure to Snapchat everything, hashtag it with #basic, don some Cleopatra-worthy winged eyeliner, pair your leggings with some plaid, and tie up that top knot. Stay Basic my friends.
