Cheesy Eggplant “Garlic Bread” With all these “Pineapple doesn’t go on Pizza” memes floating around, I thought a good ol’ Italian recipe would be “amore” for this week’s Abbey Eats. Italian food is my favorite. Pizza, bread, pasta, more pizza… basically all the carbs. Who’s with me? Everyone can be Italian if they talk enough with their […]
Abbey Eats: Recipe #1
Acorn Squash stuffed with Southwestern Quinoa
This week has been crazy. Sleep regressions and terrible twos have me like “where is my wine?!”… But instead, I’m sticking to creating yummy recipes for y’all. Because I’m nice like that! And maybe I like to eat. Probably more of the latter, but we’re going to go with the first choice…
So, without further ado, let me tell you about my amazing acorn squash stuffed with a southwestern quinoa blend.
Kale is like so trendy right now! But, why? What is it about this leafy green that all the hipsters are raving about? We take an inside look and give you the whole perspective as we explore the true benefits of Kale; along with a few favorite recipes, tips for picking, and more!
Low in calories, high in fiber, zero fat content, and so much more, Kale is probably the most nutritious vegetable you can find today. Let’s look at some of the nutritional facts, shall we! (more…)
We all loathe the list of fruits & and vegetables that are deemed unworthy of our precious produce budget. Instead of skipping on the much needed Vitamin A, C & Fiber – enjoy these seasonal Summer favorites instead!
Everyone knows that all fruits and vegetables have a season, right? If you didn’t, they do! The objective for every produce purchase is to buy those fruits and vegetables that are naturally in season. In fact, nutritionists agree that those fruits and vegetables picked at the peak of freshness and in season hold more nutritional benefits than their out of season counterparts. When you buy a fruit or vegetable that isn’t in season, who really knows where it came from or how it was raised… It probably was not organically grown. We’re using probably very liberally. In reality, that bushel of strawberries you bought in your home state of Kansas in the dead of May are more than likely a form of franken-food; lacking the true essence of a strawberry along with the health benefits.
In short, stay clear of out of season product when possible.
You’re at the grocer and get in line to check out with your three items. You glance up at the guest in front of you to get an idea of how much longer you will be waiting in line, all the while tempted by the woeful wall of candies and chocolate. It’s a couponer. Not just a one or two coupons (snagged off the pasta box while in line) either. But a bonafide binder-in-hand, ten of each item, total is going to go from $762.89 to $33 with gift cards after coupons – Couponer. All the while, you’re thinking to yourself, “ain’t nobody got time for that” or “why must you pick today of all days for your haul, when I just needed milk, coffee and goldfish crackers.”
The O word. Nope, not the one you’re thinking about, the other one; organic. What exactly does organic mean? That seems to be the question of the hour nowadays with the world of health and wellness going head-to-head with the food and Franken-food industry. Yep, frankenfood, it’s a word – look it up.
Meal planning. You may have overheard the soccer mom mafia talk about it or maybe come across a mouth watering photo montage of meat and veggies on Pinterest. Either way, meal planning is a thing, and it’s a nifty game changer at that, once you’ve mastered it.
Ah Brunch! A simple word that can wear the cloak of verb, noun or even adjective if you tried hard enough.. “OMG that cocktail is so brunch!” But the question of where to, how and when not to brunch always comes to mind. If one does brunch, where do you go? How do you know that’s where you should go? Can you bring your dog? What about the kids? I mean, really, who knew a non-shalant trip to the local watering hole for pancakes would turn into such a cultural plague of social cues and what-to-do’s.
Have no fear, we are here to “brunch” it down.. See what we did there?
Genetically Modified Organisms. Also known as GMOs, with a silent and unmistakeable taboo that surrounds them. But why? What exactly are they, and why are they all of a sudden the “bees knees” in the news, the grocery store and your box of Frosted Flakes in the cupboard?
